Portrait of Shravanti Grandhi

Shravanti Grandhi is a young student/artist living in India that I met on Facebook. Today's sketch is part of my "One painting or drawing a day" album on facebook, where I post a sketch like this every day. Lately I've been sketching caricatures and portraits of facebook friend volunteers. This is the tenth in that series. I used a wacom tablet in photoshop 7 and it took me about an hour to sketch this.

Dave Bennett

Dave and I went to high school together back in the day. I dunno if this is a caricature of Dave's bike more than it is of him. lol This took about 30 min. and I used a wacom tablet in photoshop.

Caricature of Tamara O'Neal

This is the 8th installment of sketches of some of my more brave facebook friends. The whole process took about 50 min. this morning. I used an old Wacom Bamboo digital tablet and Photoshop 7.

Caricature of Sandee Ellison

Don't worry. I haven't joined a bizarre art movement that paints only decapitated heads and plush toys. I just got lazy this morning and didn't draw the body on this one.hehe I spent about an hour sketching this with an old Wacom digital tablet and Photoshop 7. This was done for my "One painting or drawing a day" album on facebook and this is the seventh in a series of portraits or caricatures of a few facebook friends who bravely volunteered.

Gabriel M. Chavez

I screwed up and turned off my video capture progam when I broke for breakfast this morning.  When I came back to finish the sketch I forgot to turn it back on , so... no speedpaint video today. Sorry.  I used a Wacom Bamboo digital drawing tablet and Photoshop 7 to create this image and it took me about an hour.

Sheyenne Wiggins

Today I felt like painting a portrait more than a caricature. My subject is a fellow artist and portrait painter from Oregon that I met through a speed paint group on facebook. She has an expressive face that would make a wonderful caricature but she's also a very beautiful lady. I forced myself to stop after I went a few minutes past 1 hr. Then after looking at the portrait and comparing it to her photographs I realized I had gotten the angle of her chin and her camera left eye wrong so I started up again with a new speedpaint movie and adjusted those. Fortunately I'm getting better at making these speed paint movies and the jump is practically seamless.. I give it away by signing my name... then you find I'm not done but still working on the painting. When you zoom in on the original piece, it is very rough and "painterly". In this piece I used a cheap wacom bamboo graphics tablet and photoshop 7.

Caricature of Debbie Seiler Bullock

This is the fourth installment of daily sketches of willing (and brave) facebook friends.  I use an old inexpensive Wacom tablet and Photoshop.  It took me about an hour to draw this morning.

Caricature of David Scroggy

This is the third installment of a daily facebook project I started where I transform the profile pictures of willing friends into caricatures. Today's caricature is of David Scroggy. I spent about 40 min. drawing this but the speedpaint movie is speeded up to less than five. I used a wacom tablet and photoshop.

Old Chicago Bass Player

This is a drawing of an old bass player I saw a few nights ago in Chicago. He was playing with a band that was performing at the Millennium Park Rooftop Terrace. The band had a female vocalist and a bunch of brass and horns and the guys were all standing up in a roww on stage performing. I walked around to the side and saw this old bass player just sitting out of sight belting out the bass. It was a neat image :)

A Study after Daumier

I love Daumier's political caricatures! The Chicago art institute has a marvelous bronze set of his "celebrities of the Juste Milieu" . This is a simple sketch from one of the little bronzes. I always want to linger longer than is 'socialably acceptable" when I have visited that display. This head is just one of about 30 or 40 small busts he sculpted of these local characters. They are visually fun to look at and proof to me that caricaturing can be a timeless art appreciated by generations in the future. I have been to the Temple. :)

Teen Vogue Carrot

For inspiration I used a picture from my daughter's teen vogue magazine.  The girl in the picture had orange sunglasses and the same attitude as this chic

Machu Picchu Fantasy

I've never been there. I want to go.  My wife told me that if I want to go I better start selling more of my work because she ain't payin' fer it.  And she ain't hiking up either. :-)

Old Man Doodle-001

I'm having a terrible drawing day. Can't draw well to save my life. I'm better off just cleaning up around the studio. I didn't feel like drawing but forced myself to slam this out. Its just a face out of my imagination. It sort of looks like a cross between John McCain and Wallace Shawn...weird. Maybe tomorrow will be better.

George Clooney Take 2

This sketch was inspired by a suggestion by my friend Nelson Colon that I fully render some of my daily drawings. He suggested my earlier sketch of the elf pope but since I had recently slammed out a drawing of clooney and wasn't really satisfied with that, I chose today to do a more finished version of that one using a different technique.

Silly Face Drawn for Fun

Today I drew a silly face just for fun.  No profound reasoning behind it. :-)  This took about 40 minutes and I used a wacom bamboo digital tablet and Photoshop 7.

Sarah Palin Wink

I originally started to do a caricature but this isn't exagerated enough.  I didn't take it far enough. Oh well there is always tomorrow.

Elvis Impersonator Street Musician

There is a guy in Portland, Oregon that is known simply as "Elvis". A street performer, he has been a fixture at Portland's Saturday Market for almost 30 years. To say he a bad Elvis Impersonator doesn't do him justice. This guy is so wonderfully weird, he seems to be blessed with a crazy genius. I drew this after view a video clip of him performing. It took me about 30 min. to sketch this and I used a wacom tablet in photoshop.

Peter "Wormtail" Pettigrove

I really enjoy drawing characters from the Harry Potter universe because many of them are so rough and gritty.  This drawing took me about 40 minutes and I used a wacom bamboo digital tablet while working in Photoshop 7.

Cute White Bunny

I decided to draw a cute bunny for Easter. :-) This took about 10 minutes to draw.  I used a wacom bamboo digital tablet and phtoshop 7.

"Working" Kirk Reeves

Kirk Reeves is a street performer and a cable tv personality in Portland, Oregon. I adore this crazy man. He spends hours playing his trumpet outside on a curb near the on ramp to the Hawthorn Bridge in Porland. This guy has made me smile on some of my darkest days. :-) This sketch took about 30 minutes to draw but the speedpainting movie is only about 3 minutes.

The Elf Pope

I could have painted all day on this but I forced myself to quit after an hour.  It's almost complete and there... but not quite.  I hope I didn't offend any elf lovers out there. :-)

The Colors of Home

When I lived in southern california, these were the colors I missed the most.... the colors of home.  This drawing was sketched on a wacom bamboo digital tablet in photoshop 7.  It took about 30 min.

Smiling George Washington

I wanted to do something fun yet difficult today. - with mixed results. I took some pictures of george washington and I tried to draw him so that he was smiling. Most images of george make his look serious and droll. I'm sure he cracked a smile now and then, since he was human.
