Topical Girl-001

Today I wanted to go to the tropics but it has been cold and rainy this week in Oregon. So I decided to sketch a series of tropical themed sketches for my daily paintings for Facebook. Today's sketch was sketched from a photo I found on the web. The music for the video soundtrack was created by Trevin Hughes , my nephew, and a very talented young musician. The sketch was digital and done in about 30 minutes using a wacom bamboo digital tablet and photoshop cs5.

Self Portrait - 28 June 2011

Today I stayed with the big brushes. I rigged up two mirrors and sketched myself in quarter view. This is all digital- took about 30 minutes. I use a small wacom bamboo digital drawing tablet and photoshop CS5 when I'm not painting with regular paints.

Unhappy Boy

Today in Photoshop, I used a giant brush designed by Facebook friend Chris Wahl. Using big brushes makes it hard for me to fool around with details and fiddleybits and it forces me to focus on the broader shapes. This quick sketch took about 20 minutes and I used a photo of a young boy I found on the web as the source. I loved the pouty expression he had.

Expressing Jeans

Today I simply drew something I found interesting. I had been reading an article at lunch about genes and cancer and how some are expressed and some aren't and when it came time to sketch today's drawing of the day, this came out. A brain phart I guess.
This was all digital and took about 15 minutes.

Cat Man-002

Today's sketch is simply an extension of yesterday's idea or doodle. I wanted to see what this character would look like grinning or snarling and showing his teeth. Maybe it is because I have a dentist appointment scheduled for tomorrow... hehe

Cat Man

Today I did another doodle or "brain phart". This time I combined a cat and human head for a morphed cat man. This was all digital - done in photoshop using a wacom graphics tablet. It took about 2o minutes.

Bat Man -001

Today's sketch of the day on facebook was inspired by some photos I found of bats. This is just a doodle or a "brain phart". It was all digital - took about 30 minutes.

Fantasy Boid

Today's drawing was a quick sketch out of my head. I didn't have anything planned other than to use a big brush. I guess this turned into some sort of bird creature.
20 minutes and digital.

Copy after Ingres' Portrait of Louis-Francois Bertin

Today's sketch is different than "art". It is a sketching exercise I developed to force me to practice painting looser and with broader strokes. I simply used a very big digital brush and didn't reduce the size so that it was impossible for me to get into too much sniggling details. This was all digital - done in photoshop cs5. It took me about 30 minutes.

Caricature of Michael Moore #2

Today I tried a different approach to a caricature of Michael Moore. This one is a bit looser and I like it better than the one I did yesterday. This is all digital and it took 30 minutes.

Caricature of Michael Moore

Today I attempted a caricature of filmaker Michael Moore. He is the celebrity that Caricaturama Showdown 3000 contest is featuring this week on Facebook. I'm not very happy with how this came out so I may try it again later. This is all digital - done with a wacom tablet and photoshop cs5. It took about 40 min.

Codie Young As An Alien

Codie Young is a very attractive young fashion model who reminds me of an alien. This is all digital and it took about 30 minutes to sketch.

Portrait of an old drunk

Today I used an old mug shot from the internet as my source material. I'm trying to work up some better painting brushes in photoshop. I want my work to look more painterly and loose. Today's head study was an attempt to use a new brush setting (new to me)

Leonardo - Old and Grey

Today I was inspired by artist Daniel Lee and his morphing images like his series called Origin an d his series of man/animal mixes called "Manimals". I decided to take Leonardo da Vinci and a grey alien and make something out of the mix. Its all fun, just a brain phart doodle. My daily sketch for facebook. This took about 15 min. and is all digital.

Portrait sketch of Courtney Love

Today I tried a more realistic portrait of Courtney Love. This took about 20 minutes and is all digital.

Rough Sketch of Courtney Love

This was a very quick sketch. I think I need to find a good photo reference and then caricature from that instead of extrapolating or synthesizing a face out of my head using photos that aren't the same angle etc. So I'm still looking for that perfect shot of her to use as my source. This took 10 minutes and is all digital.

African Head Study-003

This is another African head study. This one took about 20 minutes and is all digital.

Weekend Head studies of African Boy

This weekend I sketched African faces. I really enjoy the geometries and the colors. It is very easy for a white artist to put his or her own facial features into another person's portrait or caricature. At least I find myself doing that all the time. These studies are meant to help me explore the beautiful differences in other races without the fear of the subject not liking it. These are just doodles...the same sort I would make in my drawing notebooks... each took about 20 minutes to do and they are both digital.

Caricature of Nicolas Sarkozy - Tweak-002

Yesterday I did a caricature of Nicolas Sarkozy and today I did some minor tweaks to make it a better likeness. I arched the eyebrows more and rotated the eyes a bit to make them more worried or sad looking with heavier thicker lids. I also worked more on the nose and some of the facial creases. Total time for yesterday and today about 40 minutes.

Today I decided to do a sketch to enter into this weeks' caricature contest at Bookface Caricature Contest group on Facebook. The target is France's Nicolas Sarkozy. This was all digital and it took about 30 minutes.

Tina Turner sketch-001

This is my first rough sketch for an upcoming Tina Turner caricature contest this week at CS3000 on Facebook. It is pretty rough but I only spent about 15 min on it. In the next sketch I will make the mouth bigger, hair bigger and more wild , reduce the scale of the body down and maybe look for a sexier pose, I dunno.
