Jason's Mother ... or "Arrangement in Grey, Black and Red"
Today's sketch is another "Brain Phart". I was looking at a bunch of Jame M. Whistler paintings online and in my searches, I stumbled upon a picture of Jason from the movie "Friday the 13th". Two cultural icons collide! This is digital and done with a small wacom tablet called the bamboo. I use photoshop cs5 on the pc.

Whoopie Goldberg
Today I tried a caricature of Whoopie Goldberg but again, my sketch drifted towards portraiture. I really think I need to sketch a subject about three times before the caricaturing part of my brain kicks in. This is digital and was done with a Wacom Bamboo brand digital tablet on a pc using Photoshop CS5. It took about 30 minutes.

Donald Trump
For today's sketch I intended to do a caricature of Donald Trump but it turned out more like a weird portrait than a real caricature. I rarely get a good caricature the first time I sketch a face. I need to sketch several versions before the part of my brain that caricatures clicks in and goes to work. Oh well. This is all digital - done with a Wacom Bamboo digital drawing tablet in Photoshop CS5 on a PC. It took about 30 minutes to sketch.

MGM Lion Habitat
Today's sketch of the day was inspired by what I saw when I visited MGM Grand's Lion Habitat in Las Vegas last week. I'm trying hard to use really big brushes so I avoid getting caught up too much in details and focus more on the broader shapes and the composition. This is all digital. It was done with a small 4x6" Wacom tablet called the Bamboo. I use a PC running Photoshop CS5.

Players
Most the people I have seen playing at the tables and slot machines have been in their 50's 60's and 70's. Interesting. I've seen a few younger than that but I'd estimate that about 85% are in that demographic. This sketch was done from carefully observing people then later sketching what I observed. It isn't a really accurate reflection of reality but it captures a little of what the reality was. This is digital and took 20 minutes with a wacom bamboo graphics pad and my laptop running photoshop cs4.

Urban Palm Tree
Today's post was not done from memory but from a photo I took out my hotel window yesterday. It was almost unnoticed and in the far distance but I zoomed in on it and felt it made a cool image with the contrast of man made geometry opposed to natural shapes. This is digital done on my laptop with a wacom tablet and photoshop cs4. It took about 30 minutes.

Las Vegas Casino Table Lady
I saw this lady yesterday at one of the casinos I visited. (I'm on vacation in Las Vegas this week) And I knew the minute I saw her I wanted to paint her for one of my daily sketches. Here she is, just the way I remember her. She looked like she had seen it all. This was done in my hotel room with a small wacom bamboo pad and my laptop running photoshop cs4. It took about 15 minutes or so. I used standard ps brushes.

Caricature of Liam Neeson
This week's target personality at Facebook's Caricaturama Showdown 3000 contest is Liam Neeson, the actor. I am a Starwars fan so I chose to depict him as his role as a jedi. This was done in two installments today of a half hour apiece. It's all digital and done with photoshop and a small Wacom tablet called the Bamboo.

Study In Facial Tones
Today I continued using really large brushes. I started this sketch out with fairly massive brushes then as I neared the end of it, I reduced the brush down about 50% or 40% of its orig. size so I could make a few details I felt it needed... like the corners of the mouth, lines in the eyes, ear details etc. This is all digital and it took about 30 minutes. I used reference from the web, which is okay for studies and practice like this but wouldn't be okay if I was making serious fine art for publication or exhibiting.

Old Man & The Sea
Its cold cloudy and damp here in Oregon today, even though its the middle of summer. So I decided to paint another beach picture. Once again I'm using big brushes. I'm forcing myself to look at the broader shapes and not get caught up in the details. This is all digital and it took about 30 minutes.
