After The Sun Sets
After the sun goes down the sun still sometimes reflects light onto clouds from below the horizon. I took some snapshots at the Washington State coast back in 2008 and used those pictures as inspiration for this sketch. I used a Wacom Bamboo digital tablet and Photoshop 7.

Synthesized "Old Master"
When I was a kid, one of the drawing games I had was making up "old masters". I would first look through an art history book. Then I'd close the book and draw something that I felt looked like an old master. Of course I was influenced by what I had seen but I tried not to copy any one particular painting. When I look at this painting, I feel like I've seen this pose or attitude before in another painting but can't remember exactly where. One of my facebook friends suggested it could be Jack Benny, My sister thought it looked like me. Oh well. This is what I call a "brain phart". Its something I fabricated out of my head. The whole process took about 20 min.

Caricature of Robin Crowley
Robin Crowley is a caricature artist from Mexico City who did a caricature of me that I now use as my facebook profile picture. This is my way of paying him back! hahaha! or as they say in Spanish speaking countries Jajajajaja! This was the 57th installment of my daily facebook friends sketch project. It took about an hour to draw. I used a wacom bamboo digital tablet and photoshop 7.

Caricature of Bruce Bickford
This is the 55th installment of my Facebook friends sketch project. It is also my 90th speedpainting video. Bruce Bickford is a world famous stop-motion animator who did Frank Zappa's Baby Snakes and he also did Monster Road. I used a wacom bamboo digital tablet and photoshop 7. It took about 3 hours total, which is longer than I usually take on these. I wasn't feeling well today and was working slower.

Preliminary Sketch for caricature of Bruce Bickford
I know this is sort of a crappy drawing. It is one of the preliminary sketches that I have chosen to develop into a full caricature of Bruce Bickford, a facebook friend and a well known clay animator. I want to do a good job on this one, so I'm going to think about it as I do other things and tackle the final work tomorrow. This was done with a wacom tablet in photoshop and it took about 5 minutes or so to draw.

Caricature of Trish Gavin
This is the 53rd facebook friend I've sketched for my daily drawing or painting. I sketched her this past May but she didn't want a caricature. She asked for a portrait instead. Recently she asked me to do a caricature of her. The whole process took about a half hour. I use a wacom bamboo digital drawing tablet and photoshop 7.

Caricature of Harry Shearer
I did this caricature to enter in the Caricaturamma Showdown competition on Facebook this week. The subject everyone sketched was Harry Shearer, an actor who is the bass player in Spinal Tap and who also is the voice of Flanders, Smithers and several other characters on "The Simpsons". The whole process took about 6 hrs. I used water mixable oil paints on a 5x7 inch gessoed art board for this one.

Caricature of Craig Bartlett
Craig Bartlett and I worked together as clay animators at Will Vinton Studios in the early days of our careers. Craig left the studio and eventually created his own network tv cartoon show for Nickelodeon called "Hey Arnold". This drawing took about an hour and a half to sketch. I used an old Wacom Bamboo digital tablet and Photoshop 7.

Group Caricature of "The Odds"
I forgot to post this on the blog too. I finished this group picture yesterday. The whole project took about 16 hrs. For some reason I got all tight and anal in the rendering. I think it may be because I was working on a very large scale (poster sized), so I didn't realize that when you back away from this or look at the total image all at the same time, the brushwork disappears because the relative brush strokes are very very small. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Work In Progress: Danny Naughton Caricature
I'm in the middle of the last of four full bodied caricatures of the rock band "The Odds". It takes me about 4 hrs to do one figure right. I still have almost 2 hrs left on this one. Once I get them done, I'll combine them all together somehow into a larger group picture. I use a wacom bamboo digital tablet and photoshop 7. This sketch has taken me about 2.5 hrs. so far.
